How to: Make DIY ‘Bread Clips’ to Organize Your Cables and Power Cords
Photo: WikipediaOh ,how we loved the genius idea of using bread clips for power cord labels. However, there are a few problems with running with this hint. First, not every loaf of bread sold has this kind of clip, and, second, if we want to label all our power cords in such a fashion our carb intake will skyrocket. To circumvent these hiccups, we’re going to make our own “bread clips,” and get those cables organized!
What’cha need:
- a scissors
- a hole punch
- a milk jug–or some facsimile thereof–rescued from the recycling bin
What’cha do:
Rinse out the milk jug if you haven’t already done so, and cut out the sides–or any flat parts, really.
Cut those flat sections into 1″ x 3/4″ rectangles, and then punch a hole at one short side about 1/8″ from the edge.
Punch a second hole above the first, and, using the scissors, cut a slit in the bottom through to the first hole punched. You can even clip the corners of the rectangle for a more ‘authentic’ bread clip look.
Use a fine-point sharpie to annotate the label. Make sure you let the ink dry completely before handling.

POST UPDATE: Curbly reader, Reuven, had another great idea and forwarded a pic. Cut a longer strip and, instead of just punching ONE hole, punch one at EACH END cutting into the holes for access. That way the tag won’t slip down or spin on the cord as much.
