How do I get my fax machine to stop putting current horizontal lines out faxes?

My fax machine (a Brother IntelliFAX 4100) continues to put horizontal lines going through the faxes. It is not the target machine, as with all outgoing faxes. The lines are fine lines in black going horizontally across the page. I cleaned the scanner window with no improvement. The fax also prints a "Check transmission Readability page (s) "and then gives the pages that have lines. There is nothing wrong with the original pages.
